The Curriculum Used In An Art History Degree Program

 Art history is an exciting field of study that combines psychology, and art history. It is typically studied at the graduate level and focuses on visual communication, impressionism, and the history of art. There are many areas of focus within the Art history major.

 Students can major in General History of Art or Special Studies in Visual Communication or Art History. The general history of art focuses on the interpretation of art as a cultural artifact. Students should expect to read texts by both classic and modern artists and more contemporary artists. Students will research topics such as genre, impressionism, Viennese art, and the art of Everyday Life. A required writing research assignment is a citation needed; students should write a paper that utilizes the citation needed, as described in the course description.

What is Contemporary Art? – Contemporary Art Theory for Beginners

 Special studies in visual arts and art history require specialized research methods. Students should conduct an original research project based on their field of specialization. These projects will be based on a thesis, a descriptive essay, a literature review, or a combination of these three. The required reading for this specialty of art history are: The works of any living artist; A book about art history; A history of visual arts.

 Visual art history students will explore how and why artists produce specific visual artworks and why certain types of visual art are popular among particular kinds of people. Prerequisites for entry into this major include a first-year college course focusing on art history or a related field. In addition to standard college courses in art history, students should pursue one to two years of graduate work at an accredited art history school. Some schools require a dissertation; others do not.

 Students may choose to specialize in either visual art history or art. Visual art history focuses on the history of art from a visual perspective. This includes the history of architecture, painting, pottery, and photography.

Typical coursework for this degree program will include courses in: visual art and sculpture; visual communications; visual production; media studies; visual theory; and historical aesthetics. 

This degree is sometimes referred to as a cross-disciplinary art history degree. Coursework may also incorporate related courses in visual science, anthropology, and the history of art.

 The history of art history covers a much broader time period than just the history of art. That includes the history of the visual culture, referring to art worldwide, visual technology, including cinemas, television, and the internet. The significant areas of focus for this concentration are to be found in different cultures around the world. For example, some courses will focus on the art of the United States, Europe, and Asia. Others will concentrate on the art of China, Japan, and Vietnam.

 Another specialization within art history is Renaissance art. It focuses on the visual culture during the period of the Italian renaissance and other European renaissance art periods. Specialized topics of study include the play of form, color, and language in medieval art and the process of Renaissance art production. Some courses in this degree program may even give students the opportunity to research the life and works of Botticelli.

 Many art history degrees are available at four-year universities. Students can complete their degrees in as little as one year. The programs are designed for students who already have some working knowledge of visual artworks and may include one or more of the concentrations mentioned above.

Spanish Baroque Art – Its Background and Early Beginnings

 A variation of the visual arts degree is the Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Performing Arts (BVA). Like the Bachelors of Business Administration and Science, a bachelors degree in the visual and performing arts gives a student the ability to perform all of the core concepts and write professional essays and papers related to visual art. Unlike most BBA programs, however, a bakers science degree focuses on baking. A bakers science degree would be a better choice for those interested in teaching or working as an art history teacher.

 There are many different concentrations within the field of art history. These include the study of artistic styles from various time periods and different cultures. For example, in the field of American art history, students will learn about the influence of European art on American art. Students in this field may also learn about the different cultures of North America, such as the Native Americans and the Canadian First Nations.

 Besides teaching art history, some people become artistic directors, putting together a group of people to produce a short film. Filmmakers study art history and decide what types of images will be used, what will play types of music, and what kind of message they want to put across through the film. Filmmakers use art history courses to learn about the art market’s history, from ancient art movements to contemporary art movements. Those pursuing a career as an art history professor may teach a class on film analysis.
